How Many Gardens Would It Take to Grow the Nation’s Christmas Trees?

Every year, the UK grows approximately 7 million Christmas trees. To make this festive feat possible, around 2,240 hectares of land are dedicated to growing Nordmann Firs, Norway Spruces, Fraser Firs, and other seasonal evergreens. To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of 120,000 average-sized UK gardens filled with the unmistakable scent of pine.

Of those trees, the Nordmann Fir reigns supreme, accounting for 75% of sales, thanks to its soft needles and lush, symmetrical shape. The remaining 25% comprises the traditional Norway Spruce, fragrant Fraser Fir, and other niche varieties. While each type has its admirers, it’s worth noting that the smell of real Christmas trees is a national favourite, ranking eighth in a recent survey of the UK’s most beloved scents—just behind the salty tang of the sea but ahead of perfume!

As property professionals, we know how much gardens and green spaces matter to homeowners and renters alike. According to the Property Academy Renter Survey 2024, a remarkable 64% of renters say access to outside space would encourage them to stay in a property longer. Whether it’s for growing flowers, vegetables, or even a few holiday-themed conifers, a garden is often the key to making a house feel like home.

So, as you decorate your tree this year, take a moment to appreciate the land it took to grow and the gardens it represents. And if you’re dreaming of a home with a garden big enough to plant your own festive fir, remember: it might take a decade for your tree to grow to the right height—but finding the perfect property could be much quicker with a knowledgeable estate agent by your side.

Here’s to a merry, garden-filled Christmas! 🌲
